Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway (Knoft Canada) is the winning title of the 2009 Evergreen™ award. Author Steven Galloway was presented with the award at the 2010 Ontario Library Association (OLA) Super Conference in Toronto on February 26th, 2010. The shortlist consisted of ten books selected by a committee of librarians from across Ontario.  Votes were cast at participating public libraries across Ontario during Ontario Public Library week in October.

This years Evergreen™ Award handed out the distinction of Honour Book to Coventry by Helen Humphreys (Harper Collins Canada).

About the Evergreen™ Program

The Evergreen™ Award program was introduced at Super Conference 2005 for adults of any age. It gives adult library patrons the opportunity to vote for a work of Canadian fiction or non-fiction that they have liked the most.  Ontario Librarians have come together to share their favourite reading with adult readers and we hope you will get your library involved in this years’ program.

How do you participate in the Program?

Any adult looking to get involved can contact their public library or register themselves.  If your library is not involved in the program please encourage them to do so.  It is an opportunity for Ontario librarians to share their favourite reading with adult readers and it is a way to be part of a book club of sorts without having to be so formal.  This way you are able to have access to great reading and move at your own speed through great Canadian writing.

How the Books are Selected

OLA members are invited to submit their favourite titles on-line (see above link that says Evergreen™ Book Submission Form).

The books on the selection list must be by a living Canadian author, and may be fiction or non-fiction, biography, memoir, history, travel book or graphic novel.

A group of experienced Librarians from across the province, who make up the Evergreen™ Steering Group, get together with all of the suggested titles received by OLA and submitted by Publishers. The long list will be assessed by the Evergreen Steering Group who will choose a shortlist of 10 titles.
