Genre authors, like genre fiction, are often ignored by traditional biographical dictionaries. Yet genre fans hunger for information about their favorite writers. This compilation focuses exclusively on 100 genre fiction authors—specifically today’s most popular genre authors. It profiles representatives from all major genres including mystery/detective, crime, adventure/suspense, thriller, horror, fantasy, science fiction, western, historical, women's, and romance. While focusing on such contemporary authors as Julia Alvarez, Maeve Binchy, Tony Hillerman, Dean Koontz, Robert Ludlum, and others, a few mainstays whose works are still in print and widely read (e.g., J.R.R. Tolkien), are included. In addition to information about the personal and writing lives of this fascinating and diverse group, users will find a complete list of their published works—fiction and nonfiction. Black-and-white author photos accompany many of the profiles.

Reviews
“This book is the latest in the Popular Author Series from Libraries Unlimited. Author Drew has written two other books in the series: 100 Most Popular Young Adult Authors (1996) and 100 More Popular Young Adult Authors (2002). In his introduction to the latest title, Drew notes that popular genre fiction generally ‘gets no respect.’ The list of 100 authors was compiled using best-seller lists, sales statistics, and fans, with librarians and genre experts acting as reviewers. The many possible choices were narrowed to those authors who in recent years have shown influence in their genres, among them Tom Clancy, Diana Gabaldon, Sara Paretsky, Nora Roberts, John Saul, and Scott Turow. All major genres are represented.
Each A–Z entry starts with the author’s year and place of birth, a headshot if one was available, a list of genres into which the author’s works fall, and the title of one of the author’s best-known works or series. Biographical information is very condensed, talking briefly about school and family. Most of the focus is on the writing. Many entries contain information about how the authors do research, how they schedule their writing time, and where they find inspiration for their plots and characters. Each entry also has a listing of the author’s works, divided into categories such as fiction, nonfiction, anthologies, teleplays, novels made into movies, and series. At the end of each entry is a listing for further information. The volume’s content is indexed by genre and by author and title. The ‘Genre Index’ includes some characters as well as genres and themes.
This is a great resource for patrons who want to know more about their favourite authors. It can also serve as a good readers’ advisory tool. Recommended for all public libraries.” Jennifer Dawson, Booklist Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved
