Role and Qualification of the Reading Coach in the U.S.

International Reading Association | Professional Development | Literacy Coaches and Reading Specialists | Available

product number: 1065553

Reading coaching is a powerful intervention with great potential to develop reading expertise in classroom teachers. However, that potential will not be realized if coaches do not have the depth of knowledge and range of skills to adequately fulfill their coaching roles. This position statement defines the role of the reading coach; provides the criteria for what a reading coach should know and be able to do; and provides recommendations for federal and state policymakers, school boards, school district and building level administrators, reading specialists, reading coaches, and classroom teachers.
