Reading for Understanding

International Reading Association | Assessment, Comprehension, Curriculum Development, Professional Development, Research | RAND Reading Study Group | Available

product number: 9164553

This report from the RAND Reading Study Group (RRSG) addresses the critical lack of research-based knowledge about teaching reading comprehension. Prepared for the U.S. Office of Education Research and Improvement, the report proposes a focused national agenda to guide a vigorous research and development program for improving comprehension outcomes for all students. RRSG details a framework for organizing the current research on reading comprehension and presents three priority domains for future research: instruction, teacher preparation, and assessment. The report emphasizes the need to build on what we already know and to generate knowledge that is practical and usable in classroom practice and policymaking.
