Neal-Schuman Publishers | Kids and the Internet | Jerry Kuntz | Available

ISBN 10: 1555703968

ISBN 13: 9781555703967

Based on the Ramapo Catskill Library System’s popular KidsClick! Worlds of Web Searching site, this unique book and CD-ROM package is designed to teach information searching and evaluation skills to children 8–15 years old. More than 90 exercises and activities are included to help kids develop the knowledge and skills they need to successfully use the Internet and other electronic resources at beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. The manual features suggestions for librarians and teachers who want to integrate these concepts into elementary curricular areas such as language arts and math, and includes an original checklist for evaluating children’s searches. The CD-ROM contains the activity sheets and the checklist in MS Word PC and Mac formats so that users can adapt them to their own needs; a unique search tool form for searching the Web; and the HTML code and graphics needed to add this form to a library or school Web page.

The Teaching Librarian, volume 11, no. 2
Jerry Kuntz is the manager of the KidsClick! Web search service launched by the Ramapo Catskill Library System in 1998. The KidsClick Web Searching Skills Guide is an outgrowth of the World of Web Searching, a web site created in 1999 as a companion to the KidsClick site. In the KidsClick! Web Searching Skills Guide, Kuntz provides teaching tools for 10 skill sets students must master if they are to become proficient searchers of the World Wide Web. These skill sets are all related to language and logic skills and include alphabetizing, category sorting, classification, vocabulary, set theory, boolean logic, taxonomic skills, recognition of word frequency, and critical evaluation of information. Kuntz provides three activities for each skill set. Each activity is available in three levels: (roughly) primary, junior, and intermediate. The book comes with a CD ROM containing all the activity sheets, which allows users to edit, update (if neccessary) and print activity sheets for local use - as noted in the copyright statement. The KidsClick! Web Searching Skills Guide is an excellent tool for teacher-librarians, teachers, and public librarians. Although it's intended for use with children in grades 1 to 8, this book should prove valuable at the secondary level as well. The activity sheets avoid cuteness and can be used with students of any age. This makes Kuntz's work very useful for those working with ESL students or students with special needs. The ability to customize the activity sheets adds to their value. This title is definitely worth adding to your collection! - Brenda Dillon, 2004

"Provides good practice for language or grammar skills....(The Web site) is informative and well-linked to other sites." - Book Report
