Reviews

“With the publicity regarding corruption in several important companies and the downturn of American companies’ stock values, this book may appear to be a victim of bad timing. Yet it provides positive examples of individuals who combined vision and hard work to create a product or service that filled a need and made a profit. The authors explain in their preface that their book is designed to provide inspiration as well as education about becoming a corporate leader. Of the 100 leaders, only two, Steve Case and Martha Stewart, have been in the news recently for their questionable business transactions.

Although the book profiles people with diverse backgrounds, the majority of entries are for white males, reflecting the business reality. The authors have focused upon businesses that should be of interest to teens. Therefore, many of the CEOs are in fields such as computer technology, entertainment, food, or fashion. Some of them, such as Walt Disney, George Eastman, and Henry Ford, established companies that are the backbone of the American economy or changed American life. Others, such as Paul Newman and Oprah Winfrey, have made their names as celebrities as well as captains of industry. The articles are arranged alphabetically, and many include a photo. An inspirational phrase or quote and a categorization of the subject’s expertise begin each article. Length varies, but the emphasis of each article is upon the professional career, not the personal life. A chronology, brief bibliography, and philosophical quote conclude the entry. Some Web sites are included.

This volume can be used not only as a biographical reference tool but as inspiration for young entrepreneurs. It should find a home in high-school and public libraries.”—RBB, Booklist
