Reviews
From School Library Journal A clearly organized and well-researched reference tool. The book opens with an explanation of the selection process and format of the listings. It includes titles published from 1990 to 1998 geared toward third-to-eighth grade readers; icons designate middle-school selections and picture books for older readers. The first chapter provides a brief overview on genre fiction for children and on library programs that encourage reading along with a list of professional resources and Web sites. Subsequent chapters cover adventure books, animal stories, realistic fiction, fantasy and sci-fi, historical fiction, and mysteries. Each section features an annotated bibliography of titles that received favorable reviews in at least one of four specified review journals or were ALA Notable or Best Books. In addition, lists of the authors' "All-Time Favorites" and of paperback series offerings for each area are included. An author/title and subject index provide easy access.
