This passionate writer, poet, and teacher was raised in the Dominican Republic until the age of ten when her family immigrated to the United States. In her work, Julia explores themes of cultural difference and personal experience. She has received numerous awards for her poetry and novels including ALA Best Book for Young Adults 2002 for Before We Were Free. Julia is a professor of English at Middlebury College in Vermont. She and her husband also have an organic coffee farm in the Dominican Republic. Julia’s most current book is an anthology of her poetry entitled The Woman I Kept to Myself. Other popular novels include How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents and In the Time of the Butterflies.
