Playing on the phrase, "The author and you," which is a commonly taught reading comprehension strategy that teaches the learner how to look at the words of an author and make inferences about what is being said, this new series will assist the teacher and teacher librarian in understanding the underlying purposes of the author as they prepare learning activities for their students. The series that will focus primarily on books for the elementary age child (K-6) will feature insights into the author's background, purposes and goals in writing his books. By furnishing an overview of the author's works, the books in the series will give teachers the big picture. This book as do the others in the series features personal information about the author, including insight into why she writes the type of books she does plus information about each of the author's books featured. Part II of this book is the author's writing workshop--writing about writing. This book in the series features the life and work of Jacqueline

Reviews
From School Library Journal This entry in a series that combines cultural and historical information with short folktales from around the world focuses on South India. The introductory section presents a brief history, an overview of South Indian states, a look at religion and the arts, and a chapter on the various storytelling styles of the area. The almost 50 stories are organized by subjects such as "Devotion and Faith," "Respect for Family and Elders," and "Hospitality and Friendship." There is an earnest quality in the accounts of devotion, of greed being punished, of achieving virtue through religious practice, doing one's duty, lessons on karma, and the importance of humility. There are also some charming and intriguing tales in the collection. The thorough appendixes briefly describe festivals and resources, including Internet and pen-pal sources. Useful for storytellers or for classroom units with older children.-Marilyn Iarusso, New York Public Library Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information, Inc.
"In each of these books, the reader is acquainted with the author in a depth hitherto unavailable to teachers and teacher-librarians. This series provides background for working with the many children who love an author's work and have so many questions. And readers will understand and appreciate the efforts behind the many hours that each author spends on creating a work to be enjoyed by thousands and thousands of children. Highly recommended." - Library Media Connection
