Funding Announcement: Ontario Expanding Internet Access in First Nations and Rural Libraries
The Ontario Library Association (OLA) is excited to share that the Ontario Government is investing an additional $78,000 into the Internet Connectivity Grant. With this increase, all First Nation Public Libraries (FNPLs) and additional rural libraries will now have full support to maintain high-speed internet service for their communities. This funding increase will fully reimburse the costs of providing public internet access at an additional 30 libraries.
This investment recognizes the essential role libraries play in bridging the digital divide, supporting education, employment, and access to government and health services, particularly in rural, northern, and First Nation communities. It also builds upon recent investments in the sector, such as the additional $1.25 million annual funding in FNPLs, signifying the Ontario Government’s continued commitment to strengthening equitable access to information, resources, and community services across the province.
These investments reflect the ongoing collaboration and advocacy efforts of OLA and our partner Federation of Ontario Public Libraries (FOPL). We are proud to have championed this funding and thank the Ontario Government for continuing to recognize libraries as essential partners in expanding digital access. This is an important step forward in our ongoing dialogue with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Gaming, ensuring that libraries remain a priority and are top of mind as we continue to advocate for additional investments and support for the sector.
Thank you to our members for supporting OLA’s advocacy efforts. Your commitment makes this work possible and helps ensure libraries remain strong and responsive to the needs of our communities.
