Happy Ontario Public Library Week!
Celebrations began early this past Friday with Canadian Library Workers Day. I had the opportunity to attend a special flag-raising ceremony at Mississauga City Hall to recognize the incredible people who make our spaces both welcoming and inspiring. This is what OPLW is all about – taking the time to reflect on how we champion and speak up for libraries in our communities.
Over the weekend, I made my way to Guelph Public Library for “Farewell to Main.” It was a beautiful event to say goodbye to the current central library, as GPL prepares for a new building to open this spring! The staff opened a time capsule from 1965, and shared many memories about the library and surrounding community. Two and a half gallons of gas for $1 – ahh the memories.
With OPLW taking place just days before Ontario’s municipal elections, it’s a great opportunity to highlight the essential role of public libraries. As communities elect new local representatives, we see how strong partnerships with all levels of government matter, which is something Dina Stevens and I spoke about Monday morning on CBC London Morning.
As part of our OPLW Roadshow, Dina and I are touring libraries and events across the province to support member libraries as they engage their communities. So. What does the rest of the week look like? Open houses, meet and greets, storytimes, ceremonial sheet cakes and community events at branches from St. Thomas to Halton Hills and Bruce County to Clearview with stops between. Dina and I are recording a behind the scenes podcast episode about the whole adventure – which we’ll be sharing with you soon!
Meanwhile, the Forest of Reading team is getting ready to announce the winner of the 2026 Evergreen Award program. OLA’s Special Libraries Committee has also coordinated a guided walking tour that’s particularly well-suited for the spooky season at Hamilton Cemetery. What should you expect? Hallowed grounds, compelling storytelling, and certainly an immersive tour.
Speaking of events and programming, a quick reminder for members about our scheduled service interruption from October 21-23. We’re making necessary database upgrades. This will improve member renewal and event registration processes in the long run, though these services will be unavailable in the meantime.
Lots more ahead. Let’s continue being Loud for Libraries!
