Common Marketing Threads in Library Community Growth

Virtual

Growing library membership means noticing the patterns that keep showing up when communities say yes to the library. In this informal, idea-swapping virtual discussion facilitated by the OLA's Marketing Libraries committee, we’ll dig into the common threads that help libraries connect with more people, then trade practical tips you can take straight into your own work. This ONLibChat will focus on three big areas:

  • Knowing your people (for real): Member personas & user types
Who are your “regulars,” your “once-a-year” visitors, your “digital-only” folks, and your “I didn’t know I could do that here” newcomers? How do we spot patterns, build simple personas, and tailor messages without making it complicated?
  • Partnerships that actually move the needle
Swap examples of community partnerships that boosted visibility, trust, and sign-ups—plus what makes a partnership worth the effort (and how to start one when you’re short on time).
  • Outreach in the wild: School boards, educators and students
Let's unpack what outreach can look like and share ways to build relationships that don’t fizzle after one event.

Bring your questions, your wins, your “we tried this and it flopped,” and your best tiny hacks. You’ll leave with a pocketful of real-world ideas, fresh angles for your marketing, and a clearer sense of where to focus next to grow membership in your community.
