School Libraries Connect:
Spring into Sustainability
Lisa Lewis
May 5, 2026
Our ‘Spring into Sustainability’ School Libraries Connect Session is in full bloom. The four presenters shared initiatives that have engaged their school communities from the get-go. A few of the ideas we discussed include a salmon revitalization project in Lake Ontario, a maple syrup inquiry, how to infuse the library learning commons with Sustainable Development Goals and a deep dive into vertical gardening. The hour-long session is packed with information that will support library professionals wherever they may be on their sustainability journey.
Eco-literacy is within reach for all of us and this session will enable you to plant your seeds and watch them grow. Log on to your School Libraries Connect portal to watch the presentation and read the detailed slide deck. You will discover plenty of opportunities that connect students to their natural world, encourage them to be stewards of their environment as well as activities and projects that lend themselves to cross-curricular programming.
OLA members part of the School Libraries Sector can watch the complete presentation and access the slide deck, including the latest in green #kidlit, by logging into the School Libraries Connect portal.

Weeding outdated materials, adding signage, trying dynamic shelving – none of it worked. Despite my efforts, students still found our elementary school’s non-fiction section unintuitive and overwhelming. They couldn’t find what they wanted, so they stopped looking.

View from a Tree Nominee
