When searching online for health information, your retrieval and evaluation practices should incorporate health literacy best practices. In this session, the Patient and Family Education team at Unity Health Toronto will introduce you to some key principles to help you quickly yield effective results. Working together, we will explore the “good, bad and ugly” of online health information, giving you the confidence to know the differences and the ability to find great resources.

You will learn how to:

  • Describe plain language and health literacy best practices to use when searching for health information
  • Identify key search strategies that help find quality health information online
  • Point people to trusted online health resources that incorporate health literacy and plain language principles
 
About the Presenters:

Tedi Brash is a Patient and Family Education Specialist at Unity Health Toronto. In this role, she is responsible for the Patient and Family Learning Centre and works with clinical teams and patients and families to ensure access to quality, easy-to-understand health information, where and when its needed. Prior to joining St. Michaels, she held a similar role at UHN and also spent many years working with various health teams across the country as a clinician, consultant and educator.

Katrina Grieve is a Patient and Family Education Specialist at Unity Health Toronto.In this role she raises awareness about health literacy, facilitates the development of patient education resources and builds staff skills capacity in patient and family education. Katrina also has over 20 years of experience in adult basic education, including as a researcher, trainer and consultant. She brings her expertise in adult literacy and plain language to health education.
